Love of my life -- Music

People usually say, the fastest way to a man's heart is through his
heart. For me, the fastest way to my heart is through my ears -
music. Music has always been a very emotional, dear, sensitive part
of my life, and I associate parts of my life with the type of music I
was playing / listening to. Recently, I found a song that totally
melts my heart – "Mollaing" by May Doni (a 14 yr old girl who has such
an amazing voice), and thought I'd share on Posterous. Hope you like
it. I actually take great pride in my taste in music, and secretly
dream to be a DJ someday. (I will be old, unattractive and unfitting,
but hopefully I'll be rich enough to pay for audience - Drinks on the
DJ! J)

Jason's birthday..

So Jason turned 25 (youngest associate in our office) and as a colleague, a friend and a cube neighbor, I wanted to give him a little toast..

Jason is really smart. He learns stuff very fast and is able to dig up necessary information, construct his opinions and make a compelling argument in a very efficient manner. I think that is a super quality to have as someone that sits on the investor side, especially as a junior ptofessional, that sees at least 15 new opportunities daily and we need to make decisions quickly. True that sometimes we misjudge and miss out of some very cool deals, but being able to do all of the above in such an efficient manner as Jason does, is quite admirable.

In addition, Jason's one of the most ego-less, unassuming, thoughtful, cooperative individual that takes many initiatives.

I used to feel competitive with him because, you know, we are both some of the many many junior professionals in the VC world with very limited senior positions.. But I give up. Haha.

Happy birthday!!

Ps. The yellow cake is from his gf - the most attractive smartest nicest girl!! :-). Thank you - it was very delicious.

Why Are People Laughing At Me?

Over the past few days, I noticed people looking at me in a somewhat belittling manner on the street, to which I said, "what? You've never seen an Asian person before?"

It was only after my boss said "haha those are some ridiculous ear muffs!" that I realized that it wasn't me really, and I shouldn't get angry..

Yes, they are ridiculous but very, very warm. If you want, you can buy them on amazon for $35.. It sells for $100 at saks..

Very Important Legal Tip -- Getting rid of Metadata

I think this is especially very important for startups who don't have the army of legal team to attack each contracts / documents.  This is something that's so easy to overlook, that can reveal critical (embarrassing) info, and that can be easily fixed by a few tools.

***********

Intro == Legal professionals are familiar with the concept of "discovery" and the requirements set out by the courts for complying with discovery demands. They also understand that they are only required to provide the documents and data set out in the discovery demand. Unfortunately, if you are providing electronic versions of your documents, you may "discover" that you are inadvertently supplying more information than you realize.

Let Detroit Go Bankrupt

This is what my boss circulated this morning.  A great, great read..   An op-ed from NYTimes.

OP-ED CONTRIBUTOR

Let Detroit Go Bankrupt

By MITT ROMNEY

Boston

IF General MotorsFord and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won’t go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed.

Without that bailout, Detroit will need to drastically restructure itself. With it, the automakers will stay the course — the suicidal course of declining market shares, insurmountable labor and retiree burdens, technology atrophy, product inferiority and never-ending job losses. Detroit needs a turnaround, not a check.

I love cars, American cars. I was born in Detroit, the son of an auto chief executive. In 1954, my dad, George Romney, was tapped to run American Motors when its president suddenly died. The company itself was on life support — banks were threatening to deal it a death blow. The stock collapsed. I watched Dad work to turn the company around — and years later at business school, they were still talking about it. From the lessons of that turnaround, and from my own experiences, I have several prescriptions for Detroit’s automakers.

First, their huge disadvantage in costs relative to foreign brands must be eliminated. That means new labor agreements to align pay and benefits to match those of workers at competitors like BMWHonda, Nissan and Toyota. Furthermore, retiree benefits must be reduced so that the total burden per auto for domestic makers is not higher than that of foreign producers.

FirstMark Welcomes a New Family Member!

I never really paid attention to our tropical fish tank until recently when the Puffer Fish started eating its tank-mates.

  • First there was, Lionfish (Victim #1) whose fins were eaten by Puffer, couldn't swim, and is now resting in our fridge.
  • Then there was the disappearance of Yellow Fish (Victim #2) - it was gone over the weekend, before I got a chance to take a photo.
  • Finally there was Bluefish (Victim #3) That is currently regenerating its fins since Monday, when we removed the Puffer.

As we removed the Puffer, we added another member to our family, Little Puffer.  Little Puffer is shy and doesn't come out much, looks so cute and innocuous.  But we are sure Puffer started like this as well.

Lesson of the Day: Never underestimate the little one.  It will grow and come eat you.

Henna on my hand @ an Indian wedding

A very very good buddy of mine is getting married and I got to attend the first Indian wedding of my life.. So amazing, so auspicious, so festive..

Today's event is Sangeet. It originated from how Indian girls get ready, decorating themselves, and it became an entire day event.

It is truly magnificent, so many colors, so much music, so much dancing.. Indians know how to rejoice!

One more thing, the buddy that is getting married.. He is this very very good looking handsome, smart, gentleman who never had a gf.. So I was convinced for 4 years in college that he was gay, but didn't say anything to anyone, didn't ask him any questions because you know that's what good friends do.. You give yourselves privacy.. But it turned out that he only likes gorgeous smart proper Indian girls and he is marrying the best this weekend.. So happy
