FW: 6 Phases of Being Employed in the Fashion Industry

FW: 6 Phases of  Being Employed in the Fashion  Industry

      Phase  1

You  are listening to jazz --
Your  first day at work is great. Your fellow co-workers are wonderful, your office  is cute, you love your assistant, and your manager is the  best!

   Phase  2

You  are listening to pop music -- After  a while you are so busy that you are not sure if you're coming or going  anymore.

   Phase  3

You  are listening to heavy metal -- This  is what you feel like after ONE month.

 Phase  4

You  are listening to hip hop -- You  become bloated due to stress, you're gaining weight due to lack of exercise  because you are so tired and have so much work to do and, when you do get  home, you feel sluggish and suffer from constipation. Your fellow co-workers  are too cheerful for your liking, your coworkers don't understand a word you  say and the walls of your office are closing in.

   Phase  5

You  are listening to GANGSTA RAP -- After  more time passes, your eyes start to twitch and you forget what a 'good hair  day' feels like as you just fall out of bed and load up on  caffeine.

   Phase  6

You  are listening to the voices in your head -- You have locked your  office door to keep people out.  You wonder WHY you are even here in the  first place and WHY you work in the GLAMOROUS WORLD OF FASHION!

PASS  THIS ON TO FELLOW PROFESSIONALS WHO NEED A GOOD LAUGH.

If you are as crazy about music as I am, and willing to discover new pieces..

Music is such an un-intrusive, yet intensely emotional part of our lives.

  1. Unlike visual arts, you can do other things (like work!) while listening to music
  2. Thanks to technology, you can take music anywhere with you on your iPod
  3. Music moves you in its entirety:
    1. Beats move your body;
    2. Harmony moves your senses / mood; and
    3. Lyrics move your soul / mind / emotions
Especially for me, who has had 80-100 hr/wk finance jobs for the past 5 yrs with little time to enjoy myself, Music has always been there for me, keeping me awake / motivated / happy at 3am cranking in the office, while my friends are living it up as a twenty-something girls in the greatest city in the world.

So it's no surprise that the greatest compliment one can give me, is when you say "you have a great taste in music". So when my co-worker Laura (she has the most beautiful eyes btw) said she liked a piece of music I posted on my Google Talk profile, I immediately made a playlist for her, and thought maybe I share it with others here.

Fun Ones To Dance To:

- (Currently on Repeat on my iPhone) Poker Face – Lady Gaga (Jody Den Broeder Remix) Don’t like the original – Jody DB did an amazing job remixing!

- Pjanoo - Eric Prydz:

- No Stress - Laurent Wolf

- Let Me Think About It - Ida Corr & Fedde Le Grand

- Turn It Up – Paris Hilton (Paul Oakenfold Remix). I don’t like the original – you really need the remix by Paul O. that makes a huge difference.

All Time Classic:

Gangstar Rap (I love the songs by Notorious BIG and Tupac – I think they have the best voices, and they have so much soul / emotions / spirit in their lyrics, etc. After they died, that’s probably when I stopped listening to hiphop.)

- LL Cool J – Loungin’ (Who Do Ya Luv)

- The Notorious BIG – Juicy

- Tupac – Dear Mama

- Tupac – Do for Love

Good Sounds & Beats:

- 4am - Kaskade (Adam K & Soha Remix)

- Illusion - Benny Benassi

- Reflect - Maor Levi

- Beautiful Things - Tiesto feat. Andain (This is the first trance song I heard at my friend's place, which really got me into it)

- Angel on My Shoulder – Kaskade

- The One – Sharam

Good, Sentimental, Emotional House Tunes

- Back Together - Hardsoul ft. Ron Carroll

- How Do I Let Go - Dennis Ferrer

Need help with Donation of Goods for Non-Profit I am Involved With..

Every other Saturday, I go down to Chinatown to mentor a lovely, smart, and ambitious 7th grade Chinese American immigrant girl for this non-profit org called APEX.  Why?  As someone that has gone through high's and low's depending on the surrounding environment, I believe external factors (e.g., family background, surroundings) are perhaps as important as internal factors (talent, drive, etc) in your success.  I am still "young" in terms of career development, but I want to share as much as possible, the "some" I have learned so far, and try to lead the youngster the better way, giving her confidence. And you, too, can help make a difference.

We are organizing an Annual Gala for 5/17, and we are seeking gifts to be donated for Gala Auction.  Could you please let me know If you know anyone that works at retail, marketing or any other organizations with goods to donate for our benefit gala auction?  Thank you!  For more info, please see below.

***************

APEX (Asian Professional Extension) is group founded in 1992 that supports development of inner city Asian youth group.  APEX currently has five programs serving New York City youth between the ages of ten to seventeen.  Programs include middle school & high school mentoring, SAT & college prep, 4th grade prep and public-speaking.  These programs are run by more than 200 active volunteers, mainly young Asian professionals.  In '07, APEX guided more than 500 students by offering educational as well as social/cultural activities.

APEX's annual gala is to be held on May 17th at Rubin Museum of Art.  The honorees are David Chang, the chef and Kam Mak, the illustrator.
You can find out more about APEX at their website http://www.apex-ny.org.  The tickets to the annual gala can be purchased on-line https://www.nycharities.org/event/event.asp?CE_ID=3608.  Formal invitations will be available in next few weeks.
In addition to the gala, likely at the end of April, APEX will also hold AIM for the Arts, annual gallery event to showcase Asian-American art.  More information may be found at http://www.apex-ny.org/aim_for_the_arts.php.

Bye Bye My Love - Leaving NYC

(Pls play youtube video at the bottom before you start reading. I am hoping to share this moment with you)

Today I spoke to my boss about my decision to leave NYC in June/July 2009 to go back to my home country Korea. It was a tough one, but I really think it's now or never. After coming home around 11pm, I spent the next 30 minutes on my building's rooftop regurgitating the memorable moments, places and people, trying to capture the moment by clicking away my camera of the beautiful city views, feeling the night breeze from Hudson River brushing against my cheeks.

I love NYC and I really think NYC is the best - today, even my facebook "where should you be living" quiz told me NYC was the place for moi!  I love everything about NYC, even the:
- super-packed subways at 8:45am
- eurotrash blowing smoke on my freshly washed & blow-dried hair, brand-new white furcoat and just-drycleaned silk dresses (it's indoors dammit!)
- ever so non-committal men who are probably texting/emailing 5 other girls on their blackberries, telling you it's for work
- never-ending 90+hr work weeks (thus the never-diminishing dark circles)
- drunk B&T teenager spilling reddish/pinkish drink all over my brand-new designer sandals
- super hot, rich, skinny girls with all the time in the world to hang out (with similarly hot men) / shop / sleep, making me feel bad about myself
- slow tourists blocking / stopping you for directions when you are running late for a meeting in your 4 inch heels
- and yes, the cab drivers who can not stop fuming about why I shouldn't pay with my own credit card b/c of 5% interchange fee they pay for CC transactions (I give you more tip, ok?).

After all, NYC is the place where I have felt so excited to go to work everyday, even with 4 hours of sleep, at the prospect of what new things I will learn, who smart people I will speak with, what cool deals I will look at (which translates into oh-so-sweet bonus).. In NY, I have sat next to/ said hello to Julian Schnabel (!!!), explored the diverse cultures incl. Purim/Indian Wedding/chinese hotpots, squeezed my wallet just so that I can relax/party in the Hamptons, loved being hollared by truckers, felt alive running in the Central Park (yes, I did like the hot men running shirtless ;-) ), randomly appeared on NYT and Glamour magazine - I am content.  Great thing is, every NY'er has a story like this.

So what will I do in Korea?  I am hoping to spend some quality time with my family, help my parents launch a health product business, get re-acquainted with my culture, while preparing to come back to US/EUR for bschool.

Meanwhile in NYC (until June 2009), my plan is to try to grab coffee/drinks with as many people as possible, so please allow me to get the first round. :-) (pls scam your way in to getting free coffee/drinks).  Also, if I can be helpful with anything, please feel free to reach out to me. I will be there.

A Few Steps Closer To A Junior Position In Venture Capital

My firm, FirstMark Capital, is seeking candidates for "Sourcing Analyst" position, and I got a chance to informally speak with very motivated, aggressive and smart individuals who have asked me, "How did you get into it?"

To that, I say, "I got lucky."

Really - I did.  I was very lucky to have met the friends I did -- starting with Shaurya, Nihar and Amar whom I met during my senior year in college - who saved me from the self-destructive Inferno I was in, and helped change my life around.  Then my bosses/colleagues atJefferies Broadview, thanks to whom, I had an extremely fulfilling and enjoyable 3 years in Investment Banking, and then now in VC - everyday, I come to work feeling grateful and excited about interacting with such smart bosses/colleagues, entrepreneurs and community members.

Yes, I did work my ass off, too, but without such generous help from others, it would have been impossible.  So here I am, hoping to help YOU by sharing some tips that I have gathered over the years, in case you are interested in pursuing a junior position in VC.

*************** Getting Yourselves Interviews ******************

1) Learn What It's About (very quick reading - 3 hours at max):

3) Reach Out To Relevant Recruiters
There are recruiters that focus on junior positions in VC/PE.  I have a pretty good list - if you want, ping me.

4) Network and Let Them Know You Are Interested
Don't be shy in reaching out to junior VC professionals for 5-10 minutes to chat. But do it after you have done 1), 2) & 3).

****************** Prepping For Interviews ******************

1) Be Ready to Answer Why You Are So PASSIONATE About:
- Technology (vs other industries);
- Buyside (vs operational, sellside);
- Early-Stage (vs PE, HF);
- Position (there are different flavors ranging from Sourcing, Due Diligence / Deal Execution, Portfolio Mgmt); and
- The Firm (Voraciously review the firm's web site - learn about portfolio companies, know the background of the professionals, understand the investment philosophy)

2) Know The Basics of Valuation
Vault Guide to Finance Interviews - walks you through all major concepts that you are expected to know, especially if you weren't a Finance major.

3) Learn What's Going On In The Market: (spend 15-30 minutes daily and get up to speed)

Please feel free to comment if I missed anything, and GOOD LUCK!! :-)

P.S. Attached is a photo of "helping each other" -- hopefully this was helpful to you.

From a Seoul'er Perspective -- Places to visit in Seoul, Korea

I have recently been getting a lot of requests for insider tips on places to visit in Seoul, Korea, so I thought I would post on Posterous and save some storage space in my mailbox. Enjoy!

*********************
Tourism:
- 63 Building: tallest building in Korea, located in the center of the government agencies / media companies (like DC).  You can go to the top and look at the landscape of Korea, and there is a great Buffet restaurant with diverse food from Korean, Japanese, American, etc.
- Gyeongbok Palace: It's a Korean palace that is very beautiful and peaceful.  Many Korean couples go there for some romantic time together.
- Insadong: Major date spot in Korea.  This is a small area in Seoul, where you can eat the traditional old korean food, see people in traditional korean costumes, buy traditional korean stationeries..

Shopping:
- Myung-dong street: it's like Korea's "soho," but a much more "commoner"-friendly.. Located in the middle Korea's financial district. Very busy, a lot of shops and street eateries. Not expensive stuff - cheap cute stuff.
- Millenium Plaza: it's like Myungdong street, but a lot more stuff in one building.
- Galleria: Berdorf Goodman in Korea

Entertainment:
- Co-Ex: One of the largest movie theaters. Also has shops and entertainment centers around it. Aquariums, historical exhibitions. Not sure what's up now, but it's a whole day worth of stuff to see.
- Club Circle: Supposed to be the best club in town, with "models and bottles" flowing in every night! :-)
- EverLand: It's a big playground (like Seven Flags), they have water park too.
- Itaewon: This is where all the foreigners hang out.  Close to the US Army, so there are a lot of american shops and stuff.

Food:
- Samwon Garden: Proper Korean food with 5-6 courses. Expensive, but very good.
- Deung na mu jip: Everyday Korean food, (like the way my mom cooks)..
- Nolbu Boodae: They have this soup that's really good, called "boodae chigae"  Boodae means "army"... When US Army first came to Korea for the Korean war in 1950's, they brought all the western goods like Sausages, Spams, etc, which were incorporated into the Korean cuisine.. Sounds disgusting, but really really good!
- Hamheung Nangmyun: IT's a cold noodle, popular in the summer time.

What's keeping me company Thursday night...

You guessed right - a piece of music.. :-)

It's 12:16am Friday (Thurs night), now and I am jamming @ work, while my gf's are partying at some fancy club in their cocktail dresses, high heels, sipping martinis, enjoying what it means to be twenty something in the city that never sleeps. If I didn't love my job, it would have been tough to live like this, but fortunately, I really love my job, esp interacting with entrepreneurs and learning everyday.

Now I am psyched that Pandora played one of my all-time favorites Never Ever by Tom Tom Le Chavelier.
